Meet Sean Rowley, Bartender at The Bareca at Bike & Boot Scarborough

Did you know our Scarborough seafront hotel has a Bareca (bar-restaurant-café) that’s open to anyone in Scarborough? You don’t have to be a hotel guest – or book!

In this Q&A, we spoke to Sean Rowley, one of our chief Bareca bartenders. We found out what he enjoys most about his job, his funniest tale and his favourite cocktail.

Tell us about yourself and your role at Bike & Boot.

I have worked in hospitality for around 10 years now and I love it. Behind the bar at Bike & Boot, I primarily make and serve beverages that ensure our guests are satisfied. I also keep the fridges stocked up and the whole bar area clean and tidy. And, at the end of each shift, myself and other team members ensure that the bar is ready and deep cleaned for the next day.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I’m a really sociable person, so I like meeting and talking with many people. Maintaining positive vibes with customers plays a big part in keeping them happy and smiling – and it makes me feel good too!

I also love the bond between me and my colleagues. The fact that I get the chance to work with them everyday makes me enjoy coming to work even more.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I actually usually have mornings to myself, as my shift usually starts between 3pm and 4pm. I get up on a morning with my children, keeping them busy until I have to get ready for work, then I start my shift and prep the bar ready for a busy evening.

What’s your funniest story from behind the bar?

I wouldn’t call it a funny moment for myself, but for the other people who were there it really was…

I was making an Espresso Martini and I used too much espresso for the cocktail shaker. I popped it open ready to pour after I had shaken it, but it all foamed right up and completely soaked me. I literally smelt like an Espresso Martini for the rest of the night!

What’s your fave foodie dish?

Definitely chicken milanese – breaded chicken breast, garlic butter and roast potatoes with a side salad and beetroot chutney.

I’ve had it a few times since I started working at the Bareca, and I absolutely love it. I’m a big fan of chicken anyway, but this is lovely. I love the garlic butter that goes with it and the side of chutney is very tasty. The roast potatoes are dreamy too!

Finally, what’s your fave cocktail and why?

Personally. I like the French Martini. We don’t advertise it on our menu, but it’s one of the classics. We always have the ingredients to make it if our customers request it. The raspberry liqueur with a touch of pineapple juice flavouring is amazing – I wish I was at the other side of the bar when it’s being served!

Hotel for Dogs: How Our Scarborough Hotel Caters for Man’s Best Friend

At Bike and Boot, we believe that dogs deserve holibobs too. That’s why we’ve designed our hotel to be the best dog friendly hotel in Scarborough (and possibly the world!), so that no canine is ever left behind.

Hounds really are our VIPs. That’s why we’ve shared the many ways we look after our favourite furry friends, from serving them a poochy pint to giving them a cut and blow dry.

Sniff & Snooze

Everyone needs a comfy place to sleep at our hotel – even hounds. All of our doggy designated rooms are pet friendly, and come with a vet bed, making them pawfect for your favourite family member.

As humans probably won’t join them on the floor overnight, we also provide each pup with a complimentary toy to snuggle up to. A new stuffed bff will be waiting in your canine’s bed, ready to greet them after their long day of beach walks and greeting other dogs with a bum sniff.

The Dog’s Dinner

Dogs are completely welcome in our Bareca restaurant, where we serve special doggy beer- the only place in Scarborough where you can have a pint with your pooch! Bowls of water are also available for those that prefer a lighter option.

We’d love for your dog to pull up a chair at the table, but they must remain on the floor whilst humans dine on our delish dishes. But hey! They can drool over their owner’s delicious grub- then drown their sorrows in their puppy pint when they don’t receive a bite.

Roam Free

When we say dogs are welcome, we mean it! They have full access everywhere in the hotel (other than our dog-free rooms, boo). This includes our Film Club, where doggies can put their paws up and relax in front of their favourite films. Lady and the Tramp anyone?

They can also curl up in the retreat and enjoy some doggy dreams whilst their human plays chess or settles down with a good book.  Peace and quiet is in the air here… until it’s time for walkies again, of course.

Prune Your Pooch

Here at the Bike and Boot, we have our very own doggy paradise, aka the Wadobi. Dogs can hop up onto our washing and grooming stations, grab a posh blow dry and make use of our poochy pamper products. Bliss!

When you’re ready to get muddy again, the Wadobi is also stocked with walking maps of the local area, so you and your pet pal can explore to your heart’s content. You’ll both be expert explorers before you know it.

Paddles Galore!

Our hotel’s seafront location is perfect for that essential activity- chasing seagulls on the beach! There are some restrictions on Scarbados’ North and South Bay in the summer season, but there are still designated places where dogs can do zoomies on the sand.

What’s more, just a few miles south of Scarborough is a well-hidden gem – Cayton Bay. Surrounded by colossal cliffs, this quiet, dog-friendly beach allows pooches to prance along its shores all year long. Shh, don’t bark about this secret spot too loudly!

So, what are you waiting for? Bring along man’s best friend and let them sample our pet friendly Scarborough hotel for themselves. You can book your dog to stay with us for £15 a night, per hound. Go on…
