Meet Simon Kershaw, Brand & Development Director at Bike & Boot Inns
Our Scarborough hotel wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Simon Kershaw. One of the top dogs at the group, Simon had an idea to create a leisure-based hotel that was perfect for bikers, hikers, surfers and dog owners. And in July 2020, our hotel opened its doors.
In this Q&A, we quizzed him on Bike & Boot, the post-lockdown staycation boom and the future of hospitality.
Firstly, tell us about yourself and your role at Bike & Boot.
I’m responsible for the growth of Bike & Boot Inns through site acquisition and development, together with the evolution of the brand itself. No two days are the same.
What was your vision behind the Scarborough hotel? Has this been fulfilled?
Simon Rhatigan and I believed that there was a gap in the market for a leisure-based brand that was fit for purpose in the 21st century. The hotel was to accommodate the adventure traveller, and offer a different way to stay in rural locations. It would be informal, yet deliver a brilliant experience.
So far Scarborough has exceeded our expectations and we look forward to opening our Peak District hotel in spring 2022.
Staycations are predicted to boom after lockdown. What are your thoughts on this?
Staycations offer great experiences. We are so incredibly lucky to live in this country so let’s recognise that, celebrate the fact and holiday here in the UK. There is so much fun to be had in the nostalgic seaside town of Scarborough and it’s home to the first Bike & Boot hotel!
We can’t wait for the Peak District property to open! What can you tell us about the new hotel?
Located in the heart of the Peak District, our Hope valley hotel will have 60 bedrooms and a great Bareca, as well as fantastic Wadobi facilities for bikes, dogs and walkers. More to be revealed soon – keep checking our social channels.
Finally, what do you think the future of hospitality looks like?
Hospitality must be experience-driven to meet the demands of a more sophisticated public. This does not mean expensive or grand, though such places have their place, a hotel should leave the guest smiling and wanting to come back for more.
