Meet Sean Rowley, Bartender at The Bareca at Bike & Boot Scarborough

In this Q&A, we spoke to Sean Rowley, one of our chief Bareca bartenders. We found out what he enjoys most about his job, his funniest tale and his favourite cocktail.
Tell us about yourself and your role at Bike & Boot.
I have worked in hospitality for around 10 years now and I love it. Behind the bar at Bike & Boot, I primarily make and serve beverages that ensure our guests are satisfied. I also keep the fridges stocked up and the whole bar area clean and tidy. And, at the end of each shift, myself and other team members ensure that the bar is ready and deep cleaned for the next day.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I’m a really sociable person, so I like meeting and talking with many people. Maintaining positive vibes with customers plays a big part in keeping them happy and smiling – and it makes me feel good too!
I also love the bond between me and my colleagues. The fact that I get the chance to work with them everyday makes me enjoy coming to work even more.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I actually usually have mornings to myself, as my shift usually starts between 3pm and 4pm. I get up on a morning with my children, keeping them busy until I have to get ready for work, then I start my shift and prep the bar ready for a busy evening.
What’s your funniest story from behind the bar?
I wouldn’t call it a funny moment for myself, but for the other people who were there it really was…
I was making an Espresso Martini and I used too much espresso for the cocktail shaker. I popped it open ready to pour after I had shaken it, but it all foamed right up and completely soaked me. I literally smelt like an Espresso Martini for the rest of the night!
What’s your fave foodie dish?
Definitely chicken milanese – breaded chicken breast, garlic butter and roast potatoes with a side salad and beetroot chutney.
I’ve had it a few times since I started working at the Bareca, and I absolutely love it. I’m a big fan of chicken anyway, but this is lovely. I love the garlic butter that goes with it and the side of chutney is very tasty. The roast potatoes are dreamy too!
Finally, what’s your fave cocktail and why?
Personally. I like the French Martini. We don’t advertise it on our menu, but it’s one of the classics. We always have the ingredients to make it if our customers request it. The raspberry liqueur with a touch of pineapple juice flavouring is amazing – I wish I was at the other side of the bar when it’s being served!
